This evening the St. Louis Cardinals (40-33) face the Kansas City Royals (31-45) in the second game of their three game weekend set. The Cardinals are coming off an absolute shelling last night at Kauffman Stadium, losing by a score of 14-6. The pitching for the Redbirds beginning with LHP Matthew Liberatore was horrific, and it only got worse from there. Tonight much rests on the right arm of RHP Michael McGreevy to get matters back on track on the mound. Going for the Cardinals tonight is the aforementioned RHP Michael McGreevy (3-5, 2.99 ERA), who in his last last three starts has gone 6.0 IP in each of those starts, and only allowing 2 earned runs each time. Yet McGreevy has not accumulated a win to his season record since 5/8/2026 - with the Redbirds themselves going 3-4 in those starts. Since 5/2/2026, McGreevy has only given up more than 3 earned runs once, when on 5/26/2026 he allowed 5 earned runs in 4.0 IP against Milwaukee. Long story short, McGreevy has consistently been the Cardinals highest quality starter all of this year. After the disaster of last night, he is exactly the starter the Cardinals should want to steady matters on the mound. McGreevy's only true achilles heal of sorts has been his propensity to give up the long ball, giving up 6 home runs since 5/14/2026 Taking the mound for the Royals is the 36 year old veteran RHP Seth Lugo (2-4, 3.86 ERA), who is 1-3 for Kansas City since the beginning of May over 8 starts. Additionally, Lugo's ERA has risen more than 1 full run in that time going from a 2.68 ERA on 5/2/2026 to a 3.86 ERA following his start on 6/10/2026. Lugo coming into tonight follows a pair of odd starts, where last time he went 3.1 IP against Texas and allowed 1 earned run. Prior to that against Minnesota, he went 5.0 IP, allowing 5 earned runs, and notably serving up 3 home runs in the very pitcher friendly Target Field. Despite how Lugo's numbers appear overall for the Royals so far in 2026, he has certainly been inconsistent. Though the Cards certainly cannot sleep on Lugo by any means, it would seem they may matchup well against him tonight.
