Zohran Mamdani took office in New York promising to spend the city's money on the people living in it rather than the priorities that came before him. His administration has pushed through a rent freeze for roughly a million stabilized tenants, reduced subway fare programs, raises for childcare and special education workers, and a policy that put 104 million dollars back into delivery drivers' pockets, money platforms had been quietly pocketing from their tips. He has also repeatedly called Netanyahu a war criminal and said the ICC warrant against him should be enforced, while admitting City Hall has no legal authority to do it himself. The response has been immediate and organized. State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov filed a formal DOJ complaint accusing Mamdani of fueling antisemitism after two Manhattan stabbings. The ADL launched what it calls a Mamdani Monitor to track his policies. Rabbi Angela Buchdahl accused him of dehumanizing language reserved for no other nation. Mamdani's defenders make a direct counter argument. Mik Moore of the progressive Jewish group New Jewish Narrative put it plainly, the community says over and over it's fine to criticize Israel, it's fine to criticize Bibi. Recent Jewish voter polling actually showed Mamdani leading two to one among Jewish New Yorkers aged 18 to 45. Both sides in this fight are arguing about the same word from opposite directions. One side asks how much criticism of a foreign government's military conduct a mayor can voice before it becomes something else. The other side argues that word gets deployed specifically to shut down that criticism before the conversation about military funding and civilian deaths ever really starts.
