In 1911, guano miners in a Nevada cave uncovered something that shouldn't have been there bodies with hair that had turned red.

Twenty-five years earlier, in 1886, a mining engineer named John T. Reid recorded a story told to him by the Northern Paiute: that a cave nearby held the remains of a red-haired people called the Si-Te-Cah, wiped out generations before in a final battle by fire and smoke. Reid wrote it down and moved on.

He had prolific no way of knowing that a quarter century later, a fertilizer mining operation would break into that exact cave and find exactly what the story described.

This is the real history of Lovelock Cave: more than ten thousand catalogued artifacts, one of the oldest known collections of decoy waterfowl in the world, oversized sandals that fed decades of "Lovelock Giants" claims, an unexplained handprint pressed into stone, and survivor skeletal remains that tell a more complicated story than the legend that surrounds them.

We go through what the physical evidence actually shows the real height of the Lovelock culture's people, the scientific explanation for the red hair, the cattle bones mistaken for giants and what it doesn't resolve. Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins documented an early version of this account in 1883, in one of the only firsthand written records by a Native author of her generation. Her book, the Paiute oral tradition passed through generations, and the physical dig at Lovelock Cave don't fully agree with each other but they don't fully contradict each other either.
