Back in 2018, I interviewed Abdul El-Sayed during his run for governor of Michigan. It was Trump’s first term. Anti-Muslim hate was rising, and he was running as himself, unapologetically. He lost that race. Today, he’s leading one of the most closely watched Senate primaries in the country despite tens of millions of dollars being spent to stop him.
