Gillibrand and Hegseth spar over American support for Iran war [dgYjmw66n9k]
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) pressed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the unpopularity of the war in Iran. "Why do you continue to prosecute a war that the American people aren't behind?" the New York Democrat asked during an Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday. "All across my state, they are furious." The Defense secretary pushed back on Sen. Gillibrand's assertion that Americans opposed the war. "When I talk to Americans, and especially when I talk to the troops, they are grateful for a president who has the courage to take on this threat after 47 years of what Iran has done, targeting and killing Americans," he said. "What is the cost of a nuclear-armed Iran?" Sen. Gillibrand called that a "rhetorical question" and disagreed that Americans were under threat from Iran. "We are not safer," the senator said. "I would just like to know why you have not sought the support of the American people." Secretary Hegseth maintained that the war had American support and was critical to national security.
