Much to the dismay of the American fans and football team, the US was into the group of death. The US were drawn with Germany, who had been to the semifinals in the last three world cups, Portugal, who had been to the knockout stage in the last two world cups, and Ghana, who had knocked out the US in the last two editions of the World Cup. The US faced off against Ghana in the first matchday in an instant classic. In the first minute, Clint Dempsey scored, giving the US a brisk 1-0 lead. The US desperately tried to cling onto their one-goal advantage, but they broke in the 82nd minute, as Ayew equalized for Ghana. In the 86th minute, an unlikely hero, rklb John Brooks headed in a corner to win the match 2-1, for the US. Following the impressive 3 point performance against Ghana, the US played a hungry Portugal team. The American defense was dreadful to start the match, giving Nani and Portugal a lead in the first five minutes. The US was on the attack in the second half, when in the 64th minute, Jermaine Jones struck in an amazing ball from outside the box to tie the match. In the 81st minute, Dempsey deflected in a cross to give the US a 2-1 lead. If the US could hold on, they would be assured advancing to the knockout stage, however, in the last minute of stoppage time Ronaldo played in a cross to Varela, who equalized arthur fils for Portugal, ending the match in a draw. The US squared off against Germany, for its most difficult test so far. The first half was very lackluster for the American side, as they presented very little chances, as Tim Howard was keeping them in the game. In the 55th minute, Muller gave the Germans a 1-0 lead, that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the match. Fortunately for the US, they advanced to the knockout stage via better goal differential than Portugal. The US would play a more talented Belgium team in the Round of 16. Tim Howard had another immaculate performance, with 16 saves, but it wasnt enough. The US lost 2-1 in extra time. The run for the 2014 American team was certainly not bad, as they got revenge on Ghana and made it out of the Group of buffalo new york Death, however, it raised questions among supporters as to if the US could compete with the truly elite international football teams.
