This evening the St. Louis Cardinals (51-48) face off against the Los Angeles Angels (40-61) in the second game of this three game set at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, California. Last night the Cardinals dropped their third in a row - and their second game in extremely disappointing fashion. Riley O'Brien, after coming into the 9th with a 2-1 lead, blew the save and allowed an Angels' walk-off HBP leading to a 3-2 Angels' victory. Tonight, the Cards look to break their current three game losing streak. On the hill for the Redbirds tonight is the often maligned southpaw by way of LHP Matthew Liberatore (5-6, 5.00 ERA), who despite his periodic 2026 troubles is 2-1 over his last three starts. Over those 16.0 IP in his last three starts, Liberatore has tossed the ball to the tune of a 2.25 ERA, allowing 9 hits, 7 walks and racking up 18 strikeouts. This is in stark contrast to Liberatore's first four starts in June of 2026, where over 15.2 IP he went 0-2, giving up 24 hits, issuing 6 walks, amassing 13 strikeouts and putting together a 10.34 ERA. These past seven starts for Liberatore are deeply revealing in regards to how it mirrors his 2026 season overall. Which is to say he experiences stretches of clearly strong performances, followed by outings where it leaves everyone questioning whether the Cardinals shouldn't use his last remaining minor league option - so he can go straighten out matters in AAA Memphis. Which Matthew Liberatore we get tonight is anyone's guess. Starting tonight for the L.A. Angels is the 22 year old RHP Walbert Ureña (5-7, 2.88 ERA), who is a midst a very good rookie season. Ureña broke camp with the big league club at the end of spring training this year, but did not make his first start for the Angels in 2026 until April 19th against the Padres. Ureña over 81.1 IP so far this year, he has allowed 61 hits, 46 walks, and nailed down 78 strikeouts - with opponents collectively hitting .204 against him. He is a tough at-bat for any MLB hitter in the box, and no doubt as a member of a better team, Ureña's record would clearly be more impressive than 5-7.
