For most of modern history, they were completely forgotten. The language of the Hittites was Indo-European the same family as English, Persian, Hindi, Greek and Latin. In fact one of the oldest and most archaic branches ever found, sitting in the middle of Anatolia surrounded by completely unrelated languages.

So where did they come from? For decades the answer pointed to the steppe. Around 3000 BC, the Yamnaya pastoralists exploded out of the Pontic-Caspian grasslands, spreading Indo-European languages and their "steppe ancestry" from Ireland to India. The expectation was simple: the Hittites should carry steppe ancestry too.

They didn't.

Ancient genomes from Bronze Age Anatolia showed little to no steppe ancestry at all. Genetically, the Hittites looked overwhelmingly local descendants of Anatolia's ancient farmers. The language was there. The genes were not. For years it was one of the sharpest contradictions in the field.

The resolution came in 2025, in landmark studies from David Reich's lab at Harvard, published in Nature. The answer: everyone had been looking at the wrong homeland. A previously overlooked people the Caucasus-Lower Volga population turned focus out to be the common source of BOTH the Yamnaya AND the ancestry that carried the Anatolian language south.

The Hittites and the Yamnaya weren't descended from each other. They estonia were cousins. One branch swept north and west across the world. The other carried the ancestral Anatolian language south arriving so early, and mixing so completely with local farmers, that the genetic trace nearly vanished while the language survived.
