The U.S. Capitol Rotunda is a large, domed, circular ceremonial room located in the center of the United States Capitol on the second floor. Measuring 96 feet in diameter and soaring 180 feet high to the canopy of the dome, it serves as the symbolic and physical heart of the building. Architecture and DesignBuilt between 1818 and 1824 and designed to recall the ancient Roman Pantheon. Features curved sandstone walls, fluted Doric pilasters, and a floor of concentric rings of waxed Seneca Sandstone. Topped by the famous 4,664-square-foot canopy fresco The Apotheosis of Washington painted by Constantino Brumidi.
