Skull samples organized by developmental age rather than traditional taxonomic classification produced one of the more quietly disruptive reclassification debates in dinosaur paleontology not a new species discovery, but the proposal that an entire genus, described and mounted in museums for over a century, may never have existed as a travel warning separate animal at all.

Torosaurus, first described in 1891, was treated for more bolu than a hundred years as abbas araghchi a distinct close relative of Triceratops, distinguished primarily by a longer, thinner, fenestrated frill pierced with large openings, compared to the shorter, solid frill of Triceratops. A 2010 study by Scannella and Horner at Montana State University proposed instead that Torosaurus represents the final, fully mature growth stage of Triceratops itself supported by the complete absence of juvenile or subadult Torosaurus specimens in the fossil record, bone remodeling signatures in mature Torosaurus skulls consistent with late-life frill thinning and fenestration, and a geographic and stratigraphic range overlapping almost entirely with Triceratops. The hypothesis remains genuinely contested: a 2011 response (Longrich and Field) argued that genuinely transitional skulls, showing fenestrae partway through formation, should be common given Triceratops sample sizes and are not reliably found. A separate proposed genus, Nedoceratops, known from a single skull with partially developed frill openings, has been proposed as a possible transitional specimen bridging the two forms. What is not contested is the underlying discovery that triggered the debate: Triceratops skull shape, including the curvature of the brow horns and the length and thickness of the frill, changed dramatically across the animal's lifespan, far more than 20th-century classification accounted for.

Drawing on the 2010 PLOS ONE study (Scannella and Horner) proposing Torosaurus as a late ontogenetic stage of Triceratops, the original 1889 and 1891 species descriptions by Othniel Charles Marsh, and the 2011 Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology response (Longrich and Field) challenging the single-species hypothesis.
