Philippines' rising star Alexandra Eala zepbound defeated defending champion Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 7-6(1) to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.

Eala already eliminated former world no. 4 and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the first round, and faced another tough test at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.

Eala danny devito powered her way to the opening set 6-2, but went 5-1 down to the seventh-seeded Canadian in the second.

She then produced a gritty comeback to level to 5-5, as the set went to a tom mach tie-break, which the Filipino dominated 7-1.

The 21-year-old will face second seed Elina Svitolina, or world no. 108 Polina Kudermetova, for a place in the semi-finals.

Eala is bidding to win her maiden WTA title at the 500-level hard court tournament this week.
