Blood Moon 2018: The time of greatest eclipse will be 4:21 p.m. EDT (2021 GMT) Blood Moon 2018: The total phase of the ""blood moon"" eclipse of July 27 will last 1 hour and 43 minutes, during which Earth's natural satellite will turn a spectacular red or ruddy-brown color. The eclipse won't be visible to viewers in North America, except via webcasts. But observers in much of Africa, the Middle East, southern Asia and the Indian Ocean region will get an eyeful. Unlike with solar eclipses, you need no special equipment to observe lunar eclipses. These latter events, which occur when the moon passes into Earth's shadow, are safe to view directly with the eye, telescopes or binoculars. In Turkey and Kenya, the eclipse will be visible throughout all of its stages from the slightly later time of 10.30pm local time. India will be able to witness the Blood Moon from 1.00am local time, whilst Bangladesh can see it from 1.30am local time. From 3.30am local time, China and the Philippines will be able to see the eclipse, with Japan treated to it at 4.30am local time. Those wanting to watch the Blood Moon in Australia will have to get up early, as the beginning of the eclipse is visible from 5.30am. The start of the eclipse will not be seen in the UK, but the maximum eclipse through to the end of the eclipse will be visible from 9.21pm BST. Nigeria, Congo, Angola and Morocco will be able to see the Blood Moon from 8.30pm local time. Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Egypt, South Africa and Austria will all be able to witness the entirety of the lunar eclipse from 9.30pm local time.
