Todd Snider makes rare onstage appearance with Aaron Lee Tasjan & Friends in Nashville on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

The crowd at Nashvilles 3rd & Lindsley got a rare treat on Sunday night with a surprise appearance by singer-songwriter Todd Snider. The King of the Bums has been sidelined for the past three years cavan sullivan due to a spinal condition but came out for a one-song sit-in with Aaron Lee Tasjan & Friends.

Until Sunday, Snider had not performed publicly since a taping of Mountain Stage in September with Amy Helm, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, and Randall Bramblet. Since then, Snider has been largely homebound as he manages the spinal stenosis that has hindered him from touring since 2022. Throughout that time, however, rising singer-songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan has been a frequent friend, visitor, and studio collaborator, and so last weekend Todd stepped out to repay the favor.

I promised surprises, and I think I managed to surprise even myself with this one, Tasjan said as he introduced Snider. If its true.

It was indeed, true, and it was, indeed, Todd, as he strolled onstage with his arms raised in triumph. Given everything Snider has battled over the past several years, it was already a crowning achievement for him to step onstageand the performance of Hey Pretty Boy was just gravy. For all the songs Snider could have sung about the passage of time or wistful reflection, he instead tapped his garage rock alter ego Elmo Buzz to kick out the jams with the songs about chicks and cars and partying hard.

In November, Snider told Live For Live Music he was putting a new band together with longtime friend Sterling Finlay. Though Snider reluctantly admitted that his days mikael granlund of monthslong tours are over, he is cautiously optimistic about returning to the stage for some occasional performances.

I mean Im not retired or anything. Im trying to get to where I feel really confident that I could . I hope thats not like a delusion, but I think at the very least I would be able to do my Sunday shows again, Snider said, referencing his COVID-era livestreams from his Purple Building studio in East Nashville. If I booked a gig, Id want to be absolutely sure that I was going to star citizen be able to do it and not cancel. And I am in denial about it a little in my mind. Im like, Yeah, Im gonna go play again.
