To cover up the crime, he doused her with gasoline and set her on fire while she was still alive. He was convicted in 1991 of first-degree murder, burglary with assault, robbery with a deadly weapon, and first-degree arson; a jury recommended the death penalty by a 9–3 vote, and he was sentenced to death (and resentenced in 1995 after an appeal).
