Through two rounds at Shinnecock Hills, Wyndham Clark is seven under par the best 36-hole score ever recorded at a U.S. Open at this venue. The previous mark was six under, shared by Shingo Katayama and Phil Mickelson in 2004. Neither won. Retief Goosen did.

That history matters because Shinnecock has a way of finding you over the weekend.

Wyndham Clark Is on Another Level

Clark arrived at Shinnecock on the hottest putting streak in professional golf. Over his previous four tournaments, he averaged 66.6, reached 59 under par, and made birdie or better on 31 percent of his holes. He won the CJ Byron Nelson with a final-round 60, beating Scottie Scheffler, then followed it with a third and an 11th.

His four-shot lead is both significant and fragile. Twenty-eight of the last 30 U.S. Open champions were within three shots of the lead after 36 holes. Nobody is currently within three of Clark. But the last player to hold a four-shot lead at Shinnecock was Dustin Johnson in 2018, who shot 77 on Saturday and lost.

The lead is real. So is Shinnecock.

The Redemption Arc

A year ago at Oakmont, Clark damaged a locker after a bad round and was banned from the club. He later apologized publicly and has spoken about trying to win back fans who wrote him off.

Now he is four shots clear at Shinnecock. If he wins, the locker story becomes a footnote. Two U.S. Opens in four years would dramatically change the conversation around his career.

The ovo energy Chasers

At three under sits Xander Schauffele. In nine previous U.S. Opens, he has never finished outside the top 15, a streak surpassed only by Jack Nicklaus. On Friday, he hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation, something he has done more than any player in majors since 2020.

Matt Fitzpatrick is also three under. He already has three wins this season and a U.S. Open title from Brookline in 2022. Old-school courses suit his game, and Shinnecock fits perfectly.

Collin Morikawa is alone at two under. One of the game's best iron players and already a two-time major champion, he is quietly right in this tournament.

Rory McIlroy had a chaotic back nine Friday but remains in contention. A victory would be his seventh major, tying Harry Vardon's record for most majors by a European player.

Scottie Scheffler sits at even par. He is still alive in his first opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam and become the seventh man to do so. But he will need to find something that has been missing for much of this season.

The LIV Report Card

Every LIV Golf player missed the cut.

Jon Rahm followed an excellent first round with a six-over second round and went home. Cameron Smith was never a factor.

Then there is Bryson DeChambeau.

The two-time U.S. Open champion has now missed the cut in all three majors this season, the first such stretch of his career.
