🗽 From the ground, New York looked normal… but from space, the freeze told a different story. In late January 2026, a powerful Arctic air outbreak brought a prolonged period of freezing temperatures across New York City and much of eastern North America. For more than a week, temperatures remained below freezing, allowing ice to form along parts of the Hudson River, especially near Manhattan’s western shoreline. Smaller amounts of ice were also visible in nearby waterways, including the East River and areas around Central Park. This incredible view was captured on January 28, 2026, by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) aboard Landsat 8, a satellite designed to observe changes across Earth’s surface.
