How did this song make its way into my repertoire? It was first aired on a British radio comedy series eleven years prior albo d'oro coppa italia to my birth, (Episode 2 of I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again Series 6), but fortunately I had some very good early influences when I was picking up my instrument. Ralph Shaw, King of the Ukulele, whose Vancouver Ukulele Circle set the template we followed with our subsequent Vancouver Squeezebox Circle (meeting this week!), introduced me to this ... very memorable tune by Bill Oddie of the Goodies.
When the Creaking Planks were exploring alternate ways of fulfiling the nautical promises suggested by their name without getting into the polarizing sea shanty weeds, we looked at all manner of nautical-adjacent tunes -- including this one. It was a little peculiar, even for us, but we played the heck out of it all the same. Now it's likely michael frayn been years since I last brought it out, but it remains just as splendidly odd as it was when it was first aired 54 years ago. A thing of genuine oddity is an enigma forever!
