FOBBVCAM ~ SHADOW & SUB ADULT SLEEPING IN ROOST TREE - BUT ON DISTANT SEPARATE BRANCHES! 7.30.26 [5fDCg8KBdFX]
The female sub adult (approximately 3.5 years old) continues to perch on the surrounding trees in the morning and afternoon. At dusk, both Shadow and the young female are seen in the roost tree but on separate branches. The sub adult is above Shadow as he is keeping his distance from her. This is Shadow's territory and one of his favorite spots for perching and roosting with Jackie. While Shadow is tolerating the sub adult, he is also not interested in her or developing a relationship. The sub adult likes this part of Big Bear Lake for its ample supply of fish & the company of other eagles. Bald eagles are social in the off season and this behavior is perfectly normal. The breeding season for Big Bear begins in December and that is when Shadow's hormones and instincts will kick in to rebuild the nest and find a potential mate if Jackie has not been released from Ojai Raptor Center by then. Until then, Shadow will be on his summer stay-cation, resting, molting his feathers & re-gaining weight lost during the past several months taking care of Sandy & Luna. It was nice to see Jackie making some improvements with her anemia treatment at Ojai Raptor Center today. She is very sick but she is fighting to recover! She has the spirit of a warrior & thousands of people are praying for her to be well again. This sub adult has beat the odds at survival and will be coming into adulthood in the next year - she is behaving normally and is not doing anything wrong. She is just trying to survive, explore territory and follow her natural instincts. She may continue to follow Shadow around the territory and perch in the surrounding trees. We would not have known how sick & weak Jackie actually was without the altercation on the ground with two other eagles resulting in her rescue and treatment now.
