Why I Read Emily Wilson’s Translation of The Odyssey Before Christopher Nolan’s Film [kkFgbMED16K]
In preparation for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, I decided to read the story — specifically Emily Wilson’s acclaimed translation. Part of the reason was because Christopher Nolan has cited her version as an influence on the upcoming film. But another big reason was that Wilson’s translation preserves the work as poetry rather than turning it into a more straightforward novelization — and I wanted to use this as an opportunity to read more poetry and experience the musicality of the language closer to how it was originally intended. I also highly encourage people to explore other translations as well. This just happened to be the version I picked up first, and now I’m excited to compare it with others in the future.
