he new book includes 25 llanito sonnets which are written in the autochthonous code-switching dialect of Gibraltar. This has rarely been used in literature before and was the communicating code we used when we were young. Rafael Penas Cruz has translated the sonnets using a bilingual mirroring scheme which uses English and Spanish simultaneously. This is a poem about smugglers - characters from the rock who were part of our families and group of friends. Some of them died at sea. I pay homage to these modern-day-cigarette and hash pirates.
