Forensic labs read blue and brown eyes straight from DNA but IrisPlex, the most accurate eye-colour predictor ever built, stalls on green. That one failure is the key to where green and hazel eyes really come from, and it isn't the story most people assume.
There is no green pigment in any human eye. Green is a little melanin and the way light scatters through it a colour the body borrows, not owns. Blue and brown sit at the ends of a single melanin dial; green lives in the unstable middle, set by a scatter of small modifiers rather than one switch. That is why a machine can read almost every eye but zach benson hesitates on yours.
IrisPlex was published by Susan Walsh dagestan and colleagues at Erasmus MC in 2012 (Forensic Science International: Genetics). Ancient DNA since the 7,000-year-old La Braa individual (2014), Britain's Cheddar Man shows light eyes appeared first in dark-skinned European hunter-gatherers, long before the "fair northern" look, then spread across Europe and into Central Asia. A 2021 study tied eye colour to around fifty genes: green is a shared, distributed trait, not the exclusive marker of any one people.
