Which countries in Southeast Asia are the most vulnerable to the energy crisis right now? In episode 13 of Asia Forward, Dr. Prashanth Parameswaran, a fellow at the Institute for Indo-Pacific Security and a senior columnist at The Diplomat explains how countries across Southeast Asia are facing the energy crisis in different ways. "There isn't a single response or a single story," Dr. Parameswaran says. "Each of these countries is experiencing the crisis differently." According to Dr. Parameswaran, the Philippines is the most vulnerable because 98% of its crude oil imports come from the Middle East. The country declared a national energy emergency in March 2026 amid growing threats to its fuel supply. Malaysia, by contrast, is a net exporter of energy. However, it heavily subsidizes domestic energy, creating a different set of challenges as global energy prices fluctuate.
