Middle Eastern partners now find themselves questioning whether U.S. military commitments and diplomatic promises will remain in place from one week to the next. According to analysts interviewed by The Times, many are already trying to reduce their dependence on Washington by strengthening ties with Europe, China and even Iran. "No one wants to be subject to a whipsaw foreign policy that doesn't know its limits," Niblett said. "That is a strategic defeat." Former U.S. negotiator Aaron David Miller reached a similar conclusion, saying the war "has undermined U.S. deterrence and credibility, antagonized America's allies and delighted its adversaries." For his part, Trump continues to insist in spite of all evidence that Iran will eventually give in. "We'll be hitting them very hard," the president said Friday. "At some point, they're going to say, 'We just can't take it anymore.'"
