As France reels from a severe heatwave, shoppers were seen wrestling over a discounted air conditioner at a supermarket in Besanon. Bargain-priced cooling equipment jas been drawing large crowds to stores and supermarkets in the country. Customers reportedly began queuing outside stores from as early hersheypark as 5:00 a.m., hoping to buy fans and air conditioners, but many still left empty-handed.
The rush comes as France endures one of Europe's most severe heatwaves in years. Temperatures have climbed above 44C (111.2F) in parts of the country, forcing thousands of schools to close or shorten the school day and straining hospitals. French health authorities have reported around 1,000 excess deaths linked to the extreme heat, most involving people aged 65 and over.
