"This ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, is by no means perfect. But it has reduced the level of violence, it has created an opportunity for some humanitarian access and Doctor Hijab has expressed to us his concerns about the way some things are working on the ground and I don't think any of us has any illusions of the challenges ahead. What we are focused on is trying to build on what is already there. To improve the porchfest somerville level of humanitarian access, to improve the level of compliance with the ceasefire, to turn this fragile thing that we have into something that can be more enduring and can be at least the foundation on which we can build a peace process in Syria."

STORYLINE:

The UK Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, said on Friday that the cessation of hostilities in Syria was "by no means perfect" but had reduced the level of violence.

Hammond was speaking in Paris as he met with his German and French counterparts to examine the Syrian cease-fire.

The cease-fire which went into affect almost a week ago is partial and - though it has largely held across Syria - it excludes the Islamic State group as well as Syria's al-Qaida branch, known as the kick Nusra Front, and other militant factions that the United Nations considers militant organisations.
