I filmed this the morning after my first-ever ayahuasca ceremony, deep in the Amazon jungle of Peru, before I had time to make sense of what had happened. My body seemed to move on its own. I could see with my eyes closed. I believed I understood a language I had never learned. For moments, I felt as though I had become part of the jungle itself. This is not a polished explanation of ayahuasca. It is my raw, immediate account of an experience that felt beautiful, terrifying, painful, and impossible all at once. Before this ceremony, I had never tried psychedelics. I have never smoked a cigarette, and I barely drink alcohol. I entered the experience without knowing how intensely it would affect me, and then I came out questioning perception, language, the mind, and what we call reality.
