Amazon reported its network fault at 10:55 UTC on Friday and said all routes were restored by 11:59. PlayStation Network didn't read "all services are up and running" until 19:11 and Sony still hasn't published a cause.

Here's the full timeline of the 24 July 2026 global PSN outage, what actually broke, and why the date matters more than the downtime: Sony announced the end of physical disc production just 23 days earlier.

WHAT WENT DOWN

Account Management Gaming and Social PlayStation Video PlayStation Store PlayStation Direct

Affected platforms: PS5, PS4, PS3, PS Vita and the web. The Store was the last to recover.

IT WASN'T ONLY PLAYSTATION

The same window spiked outage trackers for Amazon Web Services, Netflix, Twitch, Fortnite, Valorant, Apex Legends, the Nintendo eShop, X, Microsoft Teams, Copilot, Kick, Shein, League of Legends, Magic: The Gathering Arena and Google Gemini.

AN HONEST NOTE ON CAUSE

Multiple outlets linked the outage to that Amazon fault. Sony has never confirmed a cause, so we treat the link as reported not proven. What isn't in doubt is the gap between the two recoveries.

THE PART THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

On 1 July 2026 Sony announced that physical disc production for new PlayStation games ends in January 2028 new releases go digital-only after that. Sony's stated reasoning: physical is about 3% pablo llamas ruiz of PlayStation revenue. GTA 6 is already digital-only. Friday cost eight hours and everything came back. In 2028 there's no disc to fall back on.
