Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) Chief Executive Officer, **Dr Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to sustainable event management during a recent press conference at the Sarawak Cultural Village. Dr Sharzede highlighted that sustainability has become a core priority across STB's major tourism events. She emphasised that the Board is implementing a wide range of environmentally responsible initiatives, including eliminating unnecessary single-use plastics by encouraging the use of reusable drinking containers and glasses, introducing effective food waste management systems, and ensuring that all sustainability practices are carried out ethically and responsibly. She also stressed that STB does not engage children in operational work at its events, underscoring the organisation's commitment to ethical labour practices. Speaking on STB's sustainability certification journey, Dr Sharzede explained that the organisation is currently undergoing evaluations towards achieving internationally recognised ISO standards. The assessment process covers STB's flagship events, beginning with the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), followed by the PATA Destination Marketing Forum and the Borneo Jazz Festival. "Following the completion of these three events, we will be able to identify any remaining gaps that need to be addressed. We are working extremely hard to meet international standards and demonstrate that Sarawak is serious about its sustainability efforts," she said. Dr Sharzede added that STB is committed to strengthening its environmental initiatives each year, with the aim of reducing the environmental footprint of its events while encouraging greater public awareness and fostering a culture of sustainability among visitors, industry stakeholders and local communities. The Board's ongoing sustainability programme reflects Sarawak's broader vision of positioning itself as a responsible tourism destination that balances world-class visitor experiences with environmental stewardship and long-term community benefits.
