Resident Bald Eagle Spirit donates blood to help Big Bear Jackie 26-519 recover from severe anemia!

Meet Spirit, one of CALM Zoos most inspiring residents.

"Spirit arrived at CALM Zoo in May 2003 from another wildlife rehabilitation facility after being rescued by santos vs bragantino Animal Control. She was found unable to fly due to wing fractures, was severely emaciated, had been scavenging for food, and had suffered trauma to her right eye.

After a lengthy healing process, Spirit was determined to be non-releasable because of the long-term effects of her injuries.

For more than two decades, Spirit has called CALM Zoo home, helping educate guests about Californias native wildlife, the challenges many wild animals face, and the importance of conservation and wildlife rehabilitation.

Recently, Spirit had the opportunity to help another bald eagle in need through a collaboration with Ojai Raptor Center. Were incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside an organization so dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of birds of prey.

As part of this collaborative effort, CALM Zoos Animal Care Team performed a minimally invasive blood draw from Spirit. The blood was then safely transported to Ojai Raptor Center to support the recovery of patient #26-519. After her quick procedure, Spirit was rewarded with some extra trout for doing her part to jacob bethell help another eagle in need.

Birds do have blood types, but they're different from the ABO blood types used in humans. Many birds of the same species can safely donate blood to one another, which is why Spirit was able to help support the care of patient #26-519 through this collaboration with Ojai Raptor Center.

Spirit is just one of many non-releasable animals that call CALM Zoo home. When you visit, youll have the opportunity to meet her and many of our other residents, each with their own unique story. Together, they help inspire a greater appreciation for wildlife, conservation, and the importance of giving native animals a second chance.

We wish patient #26-519 a smooth and speedy recovery and are grateful to everyone working tirelessly to help this magnificent bird. Partnerships like this demonstrate how wildlife organizations can work together to make a meaningful difference for Californias native species.
