DNA just revealed what Greek history got completely wrong. For two centuries, historians taught that the ancient Greeks were replaced that modern Greek ancestry has little to do with the Mycenaeans and Minoans. Then ancient DNA testing proved the opposite. This is the real Greek origins story.
For 200 years, the accepted version of Greek history said the same thing: the classical Greeks vanished. Waves of invaders Dorians, Slavs, Ottomans supposedly overwrote the population so completely that modern Greeks were something entirely new, a people living on top of someone else's ruins.
Then geneticists sequenced the ancient dead.
In 2017, a team led by Iosif Lazaridis published the first genomes ever recovered from Minoan and Mycenaean skeletons the people of Knossos, of Mycenae, the world of Homer and the Bronze Age palaces. The results overturned the textbook. The Minoans and Mycenaeans were closely related to each other, largely descended from the first farmers of the Aegean and Anatolia and modern Greeks share substantial genetic continuity with them. The population was never replaced. It absorbed.
In this video we break down what ancient Greek DNA actually shows: where Mycenaean ancestry came from, what the steppe component really means for the Indo-European question, why the "Dorian invasion" looks nothing like an invasion in the genetic record, and why the myth of total replacement survived so long despite the evidence.
If you have Greek ancestry or you have ever wondered whether the people of the Aegean today are the same people who built the Parthenon the DNA has an answer, and it is not the one you were taught.
