A large amount of sargassum seaweed is greeting people who head to some beaches in Palm Beach County.
Because of the buildup, the county plans to clean up two beaches considered among the worst: Ocean ring Inlet Park in Ocean Ridge and South Inlet Park in Boca Raton.
"This is like my first time seeing this amount intel stock for sure. I remember last year there being some seaweed but nothing like this!" said Makena Colson, a Boca Raton resident who was relaxing on the beach at karuppu South Inlet Park.
The county says sargassum seaweed could be removed from those beaches as soon as the middle of next week. A vendor will be hired to remove the seaweed, which will be hauled away to a landfill. The county is waiting on state permits to do the sargassum seaweed removal.
"Once those permits are obtained by our vendors, then we'll move forward with the beach cleanup. So we're hoping to get that done as soon as possible," said James Davis, Director of Aquatics, Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation.
