The Weekly Mortgage Trick, Checked [dqWX6537mNy]

Divide your mortgage payment by 4 and pay it weekly. Fifty two payments a year instead of twelve. The math on this one actually holds up. On a $400,000 loan at 6.66%, the Freddie Mac average as of July 30, 2026, the monthly payment is about $2,571. Paying a quarter of that every week retires the loan in roughly 24 years instead of 30 and saves about $124,000 in interest. Here's the part nobody talks about. The trick is not the weekly rhythm. Fifty two quarter payments equals thirteen monthly payments. You are simply paying one extra month a year. Nothing about the frequency is magic, the extra payment is doing all the work. Which matters, because most US servicers do not accept weekly payments. Some do biweekly. Many will hold partial payments in a suspense account until a full payment arrives, so the money sits there earning you nothing. Third party acceleration services will happily set this up and charge a setup fee plus a per transfer fee for something you can do yourself for free. The free version: divide your payment by 12, add that amount to every monthly payment, and write "apply to principal" on it. Same thirteenth payment. Same six years. No middleman. Call your servicer before you change anything. Ask two questions. Do you accept extra principal payments, and are there prepayment penalties. This is not beating the system. It is just paying a little more, on purpose, and making sure it lands where you meant it to. Educational content, not financial advice.
