Meet KELT 9 b, one of the most extreme planets ever discovered. This gas giant is 1.8 times larger than Jupiter and 2.9 times more massive. It completes an entire orbit around its star in just 36 hours, making its year shorter than two Earth days. One side of the planet permanently faces its star, reaching an astonishing 4,300°C (7,800°F) hotter than the surfaces of some stars. The intense heat is so powerful that its atmosphere is literally escaping into space. Even its host star is extraordinary spinning 38 times faster than the Sun and so distorted by its rapid rotation that its poles are much hotter than its equator.
