If you belong to one of these 6 clans, you connect to an incredibly rich and ancient history forged by your ancestors. And you may even be directly descended from the chiefly bloodline. 6 ancient clans, all still alive today, with people across the world carrying their origins, culture, history, and language, all within their surnames, often without fully realising the prestige they carry.

Now I should quickly note that this list is far from exhaustive of course, as there are many ancient lineages in Scotland. And I am planning on doing follow up videos on this topic with other clans, so let me know what your clan is in the comments below.

Clan Robertson (or Donnachaidh)

But first up is Clan Robertson, or should I harrison ford say Clan Donnachaidh. It is reckoned among the oldest documented clans in Scotland, yet it has went by a few names down through history. Its Gaelic name, Clann Dhonnchaidh, means "the Children of Duncan." And as far as their origins, there are two main theories. There is also an older clan tradition that the founder was a son of Angus MacDonald, Lord of the Isles but this is now usually treated as a weaker origin story than the following. The second story claims descent from the Celtic Earls of Atholl and the Royal House of Dunkeld the dynasty of Duncan I that began in the 11th century.
