A Continuous 100-Minute Journey into Kings Canyon National Park via California State Route 180.
This 1-hour and senato 40-minute point-of-view (POV) scenic drive documents a high-elevation transit through Kings Canyon rio ave vs sporting National Park, traveling from the giant sequoia groves of the High Sierra down into the glaciated granite depths of the Kings River Canyon. Filmed in October 2024 during the nearby Happy Fire, atmospheric smoke drifts through the canyon, casting a hazy light across the granite cliffs and creating a dramatic backdrop throughout the drive. Presented in real-time continuous footage, the journey is captured in 4K HDR and paired with an original instrumental ambient music soundtrack.
The drive begins along California State Route 180 (CA-180 East), ascending through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to cross the Big Stump Entrance Station into the park. After passing near the Grant Grove area, the route transitions onto the official Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. The road clings to steep granite canyon walls, carving a winding descent through dramatic cliffs, exposed rock overhangs, and deep river gorges created by the South Fork of the Kings River.
As the elevation drops over 1,200 meters (4,000 feet), the surrounding vegetation shifts from dense pine and fir forests to dry, chaparral-covered canyon walls. The final stretch levels out along the canyon floor, following the turquoise waters of the river past the Cedar Grove area, Roaring River Falls, and Zumwalt Meadow, concluding at the end of the paved road deep within the canyon basin.
