First, we walk through the Capitol Crypt located on the ground floor directly beneath the Rotunda. Supported by 40 solid sandstone columns and delicate vaulted arches, the Crypt was originally designed to support the massive dome above and serve as the final resting place for President George Washington. While Washington was ultimately buried at Mount Vernon, the Crypt remains a central hub of the Capitol, featuring statues from the National Statuary Hall Collection that represent the original thirteen colonies. In the exact center of the Crypt floor lies the famous brass compass stone, which marks the precise center point of the four quadrants of Washington D.C. Next, we ascend to the magnificent Capitol Rotunda, the symbolic and physical heart of the U.S. Capitol. Standing beneath the soaring 180-foot ceiling dome, you can marvel at Constantino Brumidi’s legendary fresco painting, The Apotheosis of Washington, painted in 1865. Encircling the walls of the Rotunda are giant oil paintings depicting historic moments in early American history, including the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Surrender of General Burgoyne, the Surrender of Lord Cornwallis, and George Washington Resigning His Commission.
