Raipur Consumer Commission Orders Maruti Suzuki to Replace Car in Landmark E20 Fuel Case In a significant ruling linked to India's transition to E20 petrol, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Raipur has directed Maruti Suzuki and its authorised dealer to replace a customer's Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid with a new E20-compatible vehicle. If the replacement is not provided within 45 days, the company has been ordered to refund more than ₹20.5 lakh, including the vehicle price, RTO charges and insurance premium, along with compensation for mental agony and litigation costs. The decision is being seen as the country's first major consumer court ruling involving alleged E20 fuel compatibility issues. The complaint was filed by a Chhattisgarh-based customer who claimed that the SUV developed repeated engine problems after he began using E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol. The Consumer Commission held that selling a vehicle that was allegedly not compatible with E20 fuel, despite its availability, amounted to deficiency in service and unfair trade practice. The Commission also observed that the buyer had limited fuel choices once E20 petrol became widely available. Maruti Suzuki, however, has rejected the findings and announced that it will challenge the order. The company maintains that the Grand Vitara in question was already E20-compatible and argues that laboratory tests indicated fuel contamination rather than any defect in the vehicle. Maruti says the Commission's conclusions were based on disputed findings and that it remains confident in the vehicle's compliance with E20 standards. The case comes at a time when E20 petrol has become a major topic of public discussion in India. Legal experts believe the verdict could encourage other consumers with similar complaints to approach consumer forums, while the final outcome will now depend on the appeal process and higher judicial scrutiny.
