US President Donald Trump threatened to sue the BBC for $1US billion. The threat relates to a BBC Panorama documentary about Trump's January 6, 2021, speech, which has faced widespread criticism. During the documentary, there was a doctored recording of a speech he gave before the January 6 Capitol Hill riots, which quoted the president out of context. In a letter sent to the BBC from Trump's legal team, they called on the company to retract the "false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements" immediately. The BBC Chair, Samir Shah, has since apologised for an "error of judgment" made within the documentary. Following The Telegraph breaking the story, the BBC director general Tim Davie and the CEO of News Deborah Turness both resigned.
