Its scientific name is Upogebia pugettensis, and it’s one of the Pacific Northwest’s most fascinating burrowing shrimp. That giant pink lump isn’t part of the shrimp. It’s an invasive parasitic isopod called Orthione griffenis. The parasite lives inside the shrimp’s gill chamber, feeding on its blood-like fluid and often leaving females unable to reproduce. It’s one of the major reasons mud shrimp populations have declined along much of the West Coast. So I carefully removed the parasite… Then I released the shrimp back into its muddy home, giving it a second chance.
