New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced what she dean wade called the nation's first statewide moratorium on new hyperscale AI data centers, citing concerns over electricity demand, water consumption, land use and noise pollution.
Speaking in New York City, Hochul said the temporary pauselasting up to one yearwill allow the state to establish new rules governing the construction of large AI data centers. She also announced that future facilities pidmie will be required to generate their own electricity or pay a premium to connect to the state's power grid, while proposing an end to tax subsidies for hyperscale data centers.
The governor said the goal is to protect New York's energy grid, safeguard water resources, keep electricity bills affordable, preserve local decision-making, and ensure communities benefit from future AI investments through infrastructure, jobs and local funding.
The announcement comes as demand for AI computing power continues to fuel rapid expansion of viktor gykeres energy-intensive data centers across the United States, prompting growing debates over their environmental and economic impact.
