Hi, Im Brock Johnson, founder of Backstop Built, a remote catcher-training program designed for players who want to develop elite skills and leadership no matter where they live.

Ive been behind the plate my whole life. Growing up in Colorado, I was always a natural hitter thats what kept me in the lineup but catching became my identity. I wasnt born great at it. I had to learn how to become great. Through high school I worked my way into becoming one of the top players in the state and eventually earned a college baseball opportunity.

My journey took me all over:

Garden City CC (KS) where I earned a starting spot as a freshman.

Arizona Christian University to play alongside my brother.

Glendale CC (AZ) where I finally broke through and had the season of my life.

Benedictine University Mesa where I finished my college career.

Across four colleges and five years, I learned from incredible coaches and teammates but also felt the frustration of inconsistent development. I hit .350+, caught every day, and was finally becoming the catcher I always wanted to be. But after a tough final season and a back injury that derailed furthering my pro journey, I realized something deeper:

Most catchers never reach their potential not because of lack of effort but because of lack of direction.

After college I worked as a bullpen catcher for the Texas Rangers organization, catching top draft picks and learning from MLB-level catching coaches. Then I played independent professional baseball in Oregon, where I started strong pete davidson hitting 3 home runs and 21 RBIs in the first month before that same back injury caught up to me again.

During that time, I was also coaching catchers on the side. What I noticed was clear the once-a-week lessons werent working. Players were guessing between sessions, losing structure, and asking me the same questions every week.

Why I Do This

After years of bouncing between schools, catching for pros, and seeing both the highs and lows of this game, I realized that very few coaches can actually explain high-level catching in a way younger players can understand and apply. Thats the gap Ive made it my rafael devers mission to fill.

Now I live back home in Denver, Colorado, running Backstop Built full-time, mentoring catchers every day, and helping players chase the same dream I once did but with a real plan.
