In the summer of 2023, Barbie and Oppenheimer opened on the same weekend. The industry exhaled. Barbenheimer was proof the movie theater wasn't dying.
It was not a trend.
By 2026, the North American box office is still stuck at $8.6 billion 23% below 2019's $11.4 billion. Six years after the pandemic. With no analyst projecting a return to pre-pandemic levels. With frequent moviegoers down 22% since 2019.
