Gravel Bike Ride from Aviemore | Gravel Cycling in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland

Cycling around Aviemore is fantastic at any time of year but when the trees are glowing with autumn colours, some routes become truly magical. This gravel loop is one of those rides, showcasing the Cairngorms National Park in all its autumn glory.

The ride begins in Aviemore, following the Speyside Way to Boat of Garten. After crossing the A95 near Drumiellie, theres a steep climb into Gartenbeg Plantation. Once you descend from the woods, you have two route options:

- Option 1: Turn left up a track for about 800 metres to a gate leading into a farmers field. If the gate is open, follow the fence to the gate beside the croft, then enjoy a lovely gravel path leading to the road near the Speyside Centre.

- Option 2: When there are animals in the field and the gate is closed (as it was this time), turn back and descend the views of the Cairngorms make it well worth it! This option briefly follows the A95 before joining a bumpy path (watch for tree roots) that reconnects with the same road to the Speyside Centre.

From there, the route continues to Broomhill Station (take care crossing the A95) and onwards to Nethy Bridge. A lovely section through the Dell Woods leads into Abernethy Forest, the ancient Caledonian pine forest within the Loch Garten Nature Reserve, before reaching Tulloch Moor.

I always love including Tulloch Moor in rides in this direction its a beautiful landscape, especially stunning when the heather is in bloom or the autumn colours are on display. From there, the route joins the B970 for a short section to Knock of Kincardine. The gate leading down to Knock of Kincardine can be easy to miss from this direction, so keep an eye out. After following some scenic stretches along the River Spey, the route loops back to Boat of Garten.

The return leg first follows some more lovely stretches along the River Spey before joining the tasso d'interesse Pine Marten Trail, a nice alternative to the Speyside Way, and back into Aviemore.

A beautiful ride in any season but especially when the autumn colours light up the Highlands.
