It is the middle of August, mid afternoon, and the water feels like a warm bath. Rods are propped up all over the lake, almost every one of them dead still. In the dog days, a bass does not stop eating. It stops wasting energy. It will not chase a fast bait at noon, but it will inhale an easy meal that comes close.

THE TWO THINGS THAT DECIDE AUGUST: Oxygen and shade. Hot water holds less oxygen, and a bass is cold blooded, so the heat speeds its body up while the water gives it less to breathe. It solves that by finding the few places that still hold cool, oxygen rich water. And shaded water can run about ten degrees cooler than water a few feet away in full sun. Ten degrees is enormous to a fish, which is why a dock, a laydown, or a mat of grass is not decoration in August. It is life support, and the biggest fish owns the best one.

THE THERMOCLINE: There is a sharp invisible line where the warm surface layer meets the cold water below, and beneath it there is almost no oxygen. So the fish stack up right above it, usually where it cuts into a ledge or a hump. Fish below that line and you are fishing dead water.

Texas rig it on brush, ledges and deep grass, and drag it slowly with long pauses. The more aggressively you hop it, the fewer bites you get.

THE AUGUST PLAYBOOK: In the heat of the day they are in one of three places, buried in shade, tornado down on deep structure near the thermocline, or suspended over open water.
