STORYLINE

A night of celebration started in Madrid on Sunday as Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 to clinch the nation's first World Cup isaksen and take its place among international football's all-time greatest teams.

Tens of thousands of supporters, who had packed into a Fan Zone near Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles, cheered wildly as Andres Iniesta scored with four minutes of extra time left.

The goal at Johannesburg's Soccer City Stadium clinched Spain's fourth straight 1-0 victory in South Africa and made the team only the third to newham election results be world and European champion at the same time.

Spain become the eighth winning nation in the tournament's 80-year history.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Netherlands supporters filled Museumplein in Amsterdam to watch the World Cup final on a giant screen. But as the match progressed the fans' faces painted a different picture; of a nation watching the World Cup title slip away for a third time.

The Netherlands have now been beaten in three World Cup finals after also losing in 1974 to West Germany and 1978 to Argentina.

The Netherlands broke up Spain's attempts to get its famous passing game going with physical play that brought the Dutch eight yellow cards.

Spain also collected five yellow cards, the final yellow card count beat the previous record of six in the 1986 final between Argentina and West Germany and made the final the dirtiest of all time.
