Andrew Marr speaks with former head of BBC TV News Roger Mosey about Donald Trump's lawsuit against the BBC. The US president has said he believes he has an 'obligation' to sue the BBC for their alleged 'doctoring' of a speech he gave before the 2021 Capitol riot, adding that he wants to 'find out why they did it'. The broadcaster said the edit of Mr Trump's speech on January 6, 2021 had given the 'mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action'. BBC chairman Samir Shah has told staff that Donald Trump has 'no basis for a defamation case' over the editing of his speech for Panorama. Roger Mosey welcomes this stance but emphasises that the BBC must rely strictly on legal fundamentals, notably that the programme in question was not broadcast in the United States and appears to have had no impact in Florida, where Trump is bringing the case. He adds that the BBC urgently needs strong, competent leadership and suggests potential approaches, such as appointing a powerful chief executive supported by a separate senior journalist to oversee editorial decisions.
